Delayed maintenance. I’ve replaced motors that were clearly undersized for the vehicle’s needs. Some were rated at 12 volts but installed on trucks running 24-volt systems. That’s not just poor fit—it’s risk.
Here’s what I do now when I assess a system:
Check the voltage output at the motor connector. If it’s inconsistent or below specs, the motor won’t last long.
Inspect the mounting bracket. A loose or damaged mount causes vibration stress. Even if the motor works, it wears out faster.
Look at the gear assembly inside. If it’s seized or full of debris, replacing just the motor won’t fix the root issue.
Test the switch and fuse circuit. A weak signal upstream can cause the motor to struggle even if it’s new.
I once replaced a motor on a sedan after finding the fuse box had corrosion. The customer thought he’d fixed the problem by swapping the motor. Two weeks later, it failed again. He called me in tears—said he almost hit a pedestrian. That’s why I always check the entire system. Not just the motor.
I’ve also noticed something else. Vehicles with higher mileage often have older wiper systems. The motors degrade slowly. You don’t see it right away. But over time, the resistance builds. The motor draws more current. It heats up. Then it fails. I’ve seen motors burn out from thermal stress caused by prolonged use in heavy rain.
What I’ve learned through years of hands-on work: never cut corners. Use OEM-rated motors. Match the voltage. Follow installation torque specs. Don’t assume a replacement will fit just because it looks the same. Measure. Test. Verify.
